Vol. 497 No. 6

Written Answers - School Staffing.

Tom Enright

Question:

64 Mr. Enright asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of disadvantaged and of breaking the cycle schools which lost teachers in 1998 due to falling teacher numbers. [25895/98]

A total of 81 schools which are designated as disadvantaged and three schools which are participating in the Breaking the Cycle initiative lost posts as a consequence of declining enrolments at the end of the 1997-8 school year. As the Deputy will appreciate these were as a result of declining enrolments. The staffing schedule for these schools was unchanged.

A total of 25 disadvantaged primary schools received additional teachers for the current school year. A further three schools in the Breaking the Cycle scheme received additional teachers this year.
