Vol. 498 No. 1

Written Answers. - Fishing Industry Employment.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

62 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the number of people employed in the sea fishing industry; the number employed ten years ago; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26577/98]

Bord Iascaigh Mhara estimates that the number of people employed in the fishing industry was 16,000 in 1997 and the corresponding estimate for 1997 was 13,500.

These estimates of employment show the significant increase in employment in the fishing sector which has taken place over the past ten years. The expansion of employment, landings and value added in the sector has been supported by the structured programme of grant aid support provided under the Fisheries Operational Programme 1994-99. There is considerable potential for further expansion in the sector. I will be seeking further significant funding for the sectors in the next round of Structural Funds.
