Vol. 498 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Investigations.

Jim Higgins

Question:

137 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to the fact that an aid worker with APSO is being sought by the Garda for questioning in relation to possible criminal activities in this country (details supplied). [26861/98]

I am aware of the case raised by the Deputy.

In October 1996, the Garda informed APSO that they wished to interview the person concerned regarding a serious criminal offence. At that time and since, the individual was in Nicaragua. The Garda asked APSO to provide information on his whereabouts and work. This was provided to them. On a number of occasions since then, APSO has voluntarily informed the Garda of any change in the person's situation.

ASPO has at all times co-operated with the Garda in this matter. It is understood, however, that no contact has been made by the authorities with the individual concerned.
