Vol. 498 No. 2

Written Answers. - Hospital Services.

Question:

210 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Health and Children if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 63 of 15 October 1998, he is in a position to supply any information regarding the treatment of a patient at the accident and emergency department of St. James's Hospital, Dublin 8. [27038/98]

In my response to the Deputy of 15 October 1998 I indicated that I had requested the chief executive officer of St James's Hospital to examine and furnish a report to me on the attendance and treatment of the patient concerned at the accident and emergency department of the hospital.

I have since been advised that hospital representatives, including the accident and emergency consultant and the consultant cardiologist met with members of the patient's family on 9 November 1998 and addressed their concerns regarding the nature and extent of the treatment afforded to the patient and outlined the steps being taken to address shortfalls in certain aspects of patient care in the accident and emergency department at the hospital.

I hope that the discussions which the family members had with the hospital authorities contributed towards alleviating the distress and upset which they all must feel.
