Written Answers - Periodical Publications.

John Gormley

Question:

65 Mr. Gormley asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if her attention has been drawn to the circulation of a magazine (details supplied); if she has information on the identity of the publishers of the magazine in view of the fact that no details are carried in the publication itself; if the publishers are an incorporated or an un-incorporated body; her views on the circulation by way of sale of this publication with no reference to the identity or structure of the publishers; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [27155/98]

I have no information on the identity of the current publishers of the magazine referred to by the Deputy, nor do I have any particular supervisory role in relation to such publications. Accordingly, I have no views on the Deputy's information that reference to the publishers has been omitted from the magazine in question.

However, in an effort to be helpful to the Deputy, our Department has established from the Companies Registration Office that The Big Issues Limited is a registered company, number 216736, which was incorporated on 3 May 1994 and whose registered address is the Ormond Multi Media Centre, 16/18 Lower Ormond Quay, Dublin 7. Its listed directors are Mr. Ronan Skelly, 25 Abbeyfield, Killester and Mr. Niall Skelly, 15 Cedar Hall, Millbrook, Milltown, Dublin.
Our Department has also been advised by the Companies Registration Office that The Big Issue is a registered business name which is owned by a company called Tbi in Ireland Limited, number 293339, whose registered office is 43 Fitzwilliam Place, Dublin 2. Prior to the present company name being registered on 14 September 1998, the company was formerly known as Dromhill Trading Limited. The listed directors of Tbi in Ireland Limited are Ms Anne Colette McNamara, 18 Athol Road, Manchester MI6 8GW, Mr. Nigel Ian Kershaw, 5 Wykeham House, Union Street, London SE1 0LE, Ms Ruth Turner, 20 Brixton Avenue, Withington, Manchester M20 1JF, Ms Jennifer M. Caldwell, 34 Garville Avenue, Rathgar, Dublin 6 and Mr. Anthony John Bird, c/o 15 Brantwood Avenue, Isleworth, Middlesex. Ms Caldwell is registered as the company secretary. Ms McNamara, Mr. Kershaw, Ms Turner and Mr. Bird are listed as being directors of a variety of UK-registered companies, a number of which contain the words Big Issue in the title.
