Vol. 498 No. 4

Written Answers. - Crime Prevention.

Question:

386 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the contact, if any, he has had with local authorities to ensure that they are aware of the latest crime prevention techniques; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27563/98]

Contact with the local authorities in relation to crime prevention techniques is a matter for the Garda Síochána.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that there is ongoing liaison between members of the Garda crime prevention unit and the local authorities. This liaison may take the form of general crime prevention advice, or offering solutions to specific problems if requested.

I am also informed that a Garda crime prevention design adviser has been appointed to assist at the design stage of new building projects being undertaken by either local authorities or the private sector.
