Vol. 498 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Beverley Flynn

Question:

434 Ms Cooper-Flynn asked the Minister for Education and Science if two class assistants will be made permanent at Glencastle national school, Belmullet, County Mayo. [27601/98]

I recently announced a major new initiative in the special education area under which all children assessed as having special care needs arising from a disability will be entitled to an automatic response to those needs. The levels and nature of the response in each case will depend on the assessed needs of the child or group of children involved. The response may take the form of a full or part-time teaching or child care support depending on the number of children involved and the nature of their needs.

Officials of my Department are currently reviewing all applications on hand for child care support, in the context of this new arrangement. An application from Glencastle national school is among the cases currently being considered and a response to the school's request will issue as soon as possible.
