Written Answers - Garda Compensation Awards.

Question:

157 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of members of the Garda Siochána who received compensation in the past twelve months under the Garda Siochána (Compensation) Act, 1941, and the Garda Siochána (Compensation) (Amendment) Act, 1945; the number of these cases being processed at present; the cost to the Exchequer of this compensation paid in the past twelve months; and if he will make a statement on the matter. A total of £3,195,000, rounded to the nearest thousand, was awarded by the High Court to 115 applications for compensation, under the Garda Síochána (Compensation) Acts, 1941 and 1945 between 1 January 1998 and 30 November 1998.

There are approximately 630 applications for compensation being processed under the Acts at present. Most of these cases are at an early stage of processing and the details of the status of the claims are as follows:
