Vol. 498 No. 6

Written Answers - Boyne Valley Projects.

John Bruton

Question:

65 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will provide funding to the West Ferrard community development group who have made an application for funding for a number of projects in the Boyne valley; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28175/98]

I am aware of the excellent work which the West Ferrard group has done over the years in facilitating and assisting visitors at the Battle of the Boyne site. The interdepartmental committee on the development of this historic site has met with the group on a number of occasions and has undertaken to keep it closely advised of plans for the development of the site.

The Department has not received an application from the group and moreover, does not have funds available for the projects in question. However, Department officials would be happy to discuss with the group other possible sources of funding.

Question:

66 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will provide a progress report on the proposals put forward by the interdepartmental committee to look at ways of developing the Battle of the Boyne sites; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28176/98]

I will be seeking early Government approval for the interdepartmental committee in question to begin work on drawing up comprehensive long-term proposals for the development of the Battle of the Boyne site. Aside from the intrinsic merit of this project in its own right, it will be a central part of the Government's response to our commitment in the British-Irish Agreement to respect the different traditions in the island of Ireland.

The interdepartmental committee has already proposed the putting in place of interim measures for the Boyne site. These are designed to improve public access, existing facilities and informational material. It is expected that these measures will be undertaken in early 1999.
