Vol. 499 No. 1

Written Answers. - Cross-Border Roads.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

198 Ms Keaveney asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the position in relation to the re-opening of a road (details supplied) in County Donegal. [1246/99]

I refer the Deputy to my replies to her previous questions on 9 June and 28 April 1998 regarding the thoroughfare mentioned in the details supplied.

I have conveyed my concern on numerous occasions to the authorities in Northern Ireland that the section of this cross-Border road which lies in Northern Ireland has not yet been fully opened. However, I understand that a significant difficulty in this regard has now been overcome and that Derry City Council have formally asserted the public right of way over the relevant section of the road. A meeting will also be held later this week between the various parties involved to discuss the upgrading of the road and the Deputy will be kept informed of the outcome of this meeting.

The Department will stay in active contact with the authorities in Northern Ireland on the developing situation and will convey our strong interest in an early and satisfactory solution to it.
