Vol. 499 No. 2

Written Answers. - Driving Tests.

Billy Timmins

Question:

59 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government when the driving test currently in operation was put in place; if any amendments have been made to it; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2040/99]

The driving test was introduced in 1964 under the Road Traffic (Licensing of Drivers) Regulations, 1964, which specified the operations to be carried out by a driver during a driving test. The Road Traffic (Licensing of Drivers) Regulations, 1989 revised these operations in the light of the requirements of EU directives on driving licences.

Further requirements designed to ascertain driver fitness have been provided separately from the driver testing regime through regulations applying to driver licensing. These include eyesight testing and will shortly include a theory test in relation to driving skills.
