Vol. 499 No. 2

Written Answers. - Emergency Accommodation.

Ivor Callely

Question:

103 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the cost to his Department of bed and breakfast accommodation in relation to the provision of emergency accommodation; the percentage of this cost that provides accommodation for homeless people; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2288/99]

The information requested by the Deputy is not available in my Department. My Department recoups expenditure incurred by local authorities for the provision of accommodation, including bed and breakfast accommodation, for both homeless persons and asylum seekers. My Department recouped £20.8 million in 1998 from local authorities for the provision of such accommodation of which it is estimated that approximately £4 million was in relation to accommodation provided for homeless persons and approximately £17 million in relation to emergency accommodation for asylum seekers.
