Vol. 499 No. 3

Written Answers - School Transport.

Austin Deasy

Question:

354 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will allow children from the Aglish area of County Waterford to avail of transport to post primary schools in Youghal in view fo the fact that there are 13 children travelling three miles to and from the boundary of the catchment area to get transport to Youghal and this figure is likely to increase in the new school year; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2754/99]

Eligible second level pupils who wish to attend a school outside of their own catchment area may be allowed transport only from within the catchment boundary of the school they attend, provided there are spare seats available and no extra State cost is involved.

The pupils from Aglish are in the Cappoquin catchment area but have opted to attend school in Youghal. Under the terms of the scheme, therefore, I regret that they can only be allowed transport from within the Youghal catchment area, subject to the conditions outlined above.
