Vol. 499 No. 3

Written Answers - School Staffing.

Beverley Flynn

Question:

357 Ms Cooper-Flynn asked the Minister for Education and Science if a person (details supplied) in County Mayo who is a trained montessori teacher is eligible for a permanent position in mainstream schools. [2791/99]

The person referred to by the Deputy completed the three year full time course in the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) College, Mount St. Mary's, Milltown, Dublin 14 (formerly Sion Hill). Such teachers are recognised by my Department as qualified to teach only in special schools for the mentally handicapped, the emotionally disturbed, and the hearing impaired.

In addition, I have recently decided that AMI Montessori teachers will now be recognised as fully qualified for substitute teaching purposes in mainstream primary schools.

However, the person referred to by the Deputy is not eligible for a permanent position in mainstream national schools.
