Vol. 499 No. 3

Written Answers - Children and Family Policy.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

130 Ms Shortall asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the areas of responsibility, if any, her Department has with regard to the Government's policy on children; the areas of responsibility, if any, her Department has with regard to the Government's policy on the family; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2734/99]

As regards children, my Department is responsible for the formulation and implementation of policy regarding the protection of children and young persons in employment. In this context, the Protection of Young Persons (Employment) Act, 1996 sets down the rules for the employment of children, persons under the age of 16 or the school leaving age – whichever is higher – and young persons, 16 and 17 year olds. As regards the family, my Department has no particular responsibilities directed specifically at this area.
