Vol. 499 No. 5

Written Answers. - Architectural Heritage.

John Bruton

Question:

103 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will put a preservation order on the old workhouse buildings (details supplied) in Dunshaughlin, County Meath, in order that they will not be demolished; if she will purchase the buildings on behalf of the State and have them restored in view of the fact they are an important part of our heritage; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3106/99]

Meath County Council have listed this old workhouse building for preservation (List 1) in the Meath County Development Plan. This means that planning permission would have to be obtained from Meath County Council by a developer for any proposed building works, including demolition, changes of use or alterations.

My Department does not have funding available to it which could be allocated to purchase this property. Dúchas, the Heritage Service of my Department, is primarily concerned with sites and monuments of the pre 1700 AD period and available funding is primarily directed towards such properties in State care.
