Vol. 499 No. 5

Written Answers. - Parental Leave.

Michael D'Arcy

Question:

18 Mr. D'Arcy asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his Department has been notified by the European Union that section 6(2) of the Parental Leave Act, 1998, does not comply with EU policy; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2958/99]

I understand that following the Parental Leave Act coming into operation on 3 December 1998, the Irish Congress of Trade Unions formally lodged a complaint with the European Commission to the effect that Ireland had not correctly transposed the EU Directive on Parental Leave (96/34/EC).

However, my Department has, as yet, received no communication from the European Commission regarding this matter.
