Vol. 499 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Disciplinary Proceedings.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

26 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of members of the Garda Síochána convicted of criminal offences who remain on full pay while suspended; the policy of the Garda in relation to members who have been convicted of criminal offences; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3035/99]

When a member of the Garda Síochána is suspended he loses his entitlement to full pay. A suspension allowance of 75 per cent of basic pay is payable.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that, at present, one member convicted of criminal offences is on suspension rate of pay.

The Garda authorities further inform me that disciplinary proceedings are taken against members of the Garda Síochána who are convicted of criminal offences.
