Vol. 500 No. 2

Written Answers. - Industrial Development.

Michael Creed

Question:

170 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands her views on whether Gaeltacht regions outside the proposed Objective One area will be at a distinct disadvantage when attempting to attract new industry; if she will ensure the level of grant aid for new industry will be the same in all Gaeltacht areas; and the way in which she envisages that Údarás na Gaeltachta will be able to attract new industry into Gaeltacht area outside Objective One in the event of it not being permissible. [3768/99]

The question of designating Ireland as two separate regions for regional aid purposes post 1999 is still being discussed with the European Union. It is my understanding that the main difference as it might affect Gaeltacht areas between Objective One and Transition Status would relate to the level of grant aid for industrial development and I will be examining ways to ameliorate any difficulties that might arise.
