Vol. 500 No. 2

Written Answers. - Adult Education.

Alan Shatter

Question:

109 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason new local adult education bodies are favoured over the VEC structure. [3630/99]

The Green Paper on Adult Education which was published in November 1998 is essentially a discussion document on the development of adult education for the future. My Department is about to engage in widespread consultation with all interested parties on the Green Paper proposals including the most appropriate structures for the effective delivery of adult education services both at national and at local level. No decision will be taken on structures until this process has been completed.

The structures proposed in the Green Paper are designed to correct perceived weaknesses in the present system, to reflect the presence of a multiplicity of providers and to allow statutory and voluntary providers to work in harmony and partnership to meet local needs.
