Vol. 500 No. 3

Written Answers. - Inshore Fisheries.

Austin Deasy

Question:

10 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he has resolved the problems with inshore fishermen who feel that their right to earn a living has been infringed upon due to the laying of trestles for shellfish production on the outreaches in the general area of Woodstown Strand, County Waterford; and, if not, the action, if any, he will take to solve the issue. [3742/99]

As legal action has been initiated by a number of people in the matter, I am constrained from commenting in detail.

However, following careful consideration of a licence application publicly advertised, I have decided to grant an aquaculture licence in respect of the application for the cultivation of oysters on a site in Woodstown Bay, County Waterford, and have, as is required by law, published my decision by way of a notice in the Waterford News and Star on 22 January 1999.

That notice also advised about the statutory appeals procedures available and the deadline for appeals to be lodged with the Aquaculture Licences Appeals Board.
