Vol. 500 No. 3

Written Answers. - Fishery Harbours.

Derek McDowell

Question:

13 Mr. McDowell asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the plans, if any, he has for the future ownership and management of each of the fishery harbour centres. [3816/99]

I announced last year that I would bring forward legislation to provide for a new management structure for the existing five fishery harbour centres and that Dingle would be included in the new arrangements.

The new structure will have a more commercial mandate and will be market-driven and focused on customer service, with a particular emphasis on local involvement, initiative and development. This will facilitate innovative approaches to financing, resulting in best value-for-money for all involved in the fishery sector.

Consultation has been under way with all interested parties on the proposed changes and I have asked my Department to expedite the legislative proposals required to give effect to the new management structures.
