Vol. 500 No. 4

Written Answers. - Genetically Modified Organisms.

John Gormley

Question:

273 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will report on the progress of the consultation process, genetically modified organisms and the environment; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4029/99]

Almost 200 written submissions were received from organisations and individuals in response to the national consultation paper which I issued on 24 August 1998. By letter dated 20 January 1999, all of these respondents were notified of plans for a two part debate which will be held this spring for the purpose of identifying and analysing the most critical environmental issues arising from the deliberate release of genetically modified organisms to the environment. The debate will be managed by an independent chairperson whom I will appoint shortly. On foot of a report from the chairperson, I will complete the review of national policy and procedures on environmental protection in the context of the deliberate release of genetically modified organisms, and I will make a statement on the outcome. I will make this statement widely available and arrange for a copy to be placed in the Oireachtas Library.
