Vol. 500 No. 4

Written Answers. - Water Pollution.

Mary Hanafin

Question:

275 Ms Hanafin asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of prosecutions initiated for water pollution by local authorities in each of the years 1997 and 1998; the number of such prosecutions resulting from fish kills; and the number of convictions in each case. [4040/99]

Information provided to my Department by local authorities indicates that, in 1997, 56 prosecutions were initiated by the authorities in relation to offences under the Local Government (Water Pollution) Acts 1977 and 1990 and that 42 convictions were secured. More detailed information is set out in the following table in relation to prosecutions and convictions under different sections of the 1997 Act. The available information does not differentiate those prosecutions specifically resulting from fish kills.

The information for 1998 is not yet available in my Department.
