Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs
if he will give details of the solicitors involved in bringing the social welfare equality payments cases against the State; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Legal proceedings were initiated in some 500 cases involving over 16,000 plaintiffs arising from the delay in implementing the equal treatment directive. These cases were taken by some 149 solicitors.
Prior to the High Court judgment of 3 February 1995, settlements were made in a number of cases during the period 1991 to 1994 which were subject to conditions as to confidentiality. I have been advised by the office of the Attorney General that I should not, without its consent, make known the names of these solicitors of whom there are 12 in number. I understand that the Chief State Solicitor's officer has pursued the matter of consent with the solicitors involved and the consent has not been forthcoming.
Following, however, is a tabular statement giving the names of the other 137 solicitors involved in taking these cases.
