Vol. 500 No. 4

Written Answers. - Bog Classification.

Jim Higgins

Question:

313 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if bogs (details supplied) in County Mayo have been classified as national heritage areas or areas of special conservation. [4276/99]

I have looked into this matter and the position is that the first bog referred to by the Deputy is not proposed for designation as either a natural heritage area or a special area of conservation. Parts of the other two bogs are included within bog complexes proposed as SACs.

I have directed Dúchas, the heritage service of my Department, to transmit maps indicating the relevant areas and further information in respect of these sites directly to the Deputy.
