Vol. 500 No. 4

Written Answers. - Court Procedures.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

332 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, he has to require the courts to allow some latitude to defendants or witnesses who are unable to attend court, for example due to holidays, special family events and so on and particularly, in minor cases; his views on whether it is unfair that cases should proceed in the absence of the defendant; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4075/99]

The organisation of the business of the various courts is a matter for the presidents of those courts and I have no function in the matter. It is a matter for a court to decide if a case should proceed in the absence of the defendant or witnesses.
