Written Answers. - English Language Schools.

Question:

366 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans, if any, he has to regulate private schools providing English language tuition to foreign students; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4092/99]

My Department has been involved in the recognition of EFL – English as a foreign language – schools since the early 1970s. The inspec tion-recognition scheme for the schools is administered through the Advisory Council for English Language Schools Limited. In 1998, 180 EFL schools, both year-round and summer schools, were recognised by my Department.
