Vol. 500 No. 4

Written Answers. - Pupil-Teacher Ratio.

Bernard Allen

Question:

374 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will ensure that St. Vincent's convent school, Cork (details supplied), retains its current number of class teachers in spite of a slight decline in pupil numbers, because the school is situated in a very disadvantaged area. [4127/99]

St. Vincent's convent school currently has a staffing of a principal and 24 mainstream teaching posts. Additionally, the school has the services of a remedial teaching post, a home school liaison post, and two concessionary posts on account of its designation as a disadvantaged school. I understand that the enrolment at the school in September 1998 has declined to 695 pupils. However, as yet no decision has been made regarding the staffing allocations for primary schools for the 1999-2000 school year. As soon as the allocations have been determined, officials of my Department will review the school's entitlement and thereafter correspond directly with the board of management in this matter.
