Vol. 500 No. 7

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Richard Bruton

Question:

378 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if arrangements will be made in order that deaf pupils who wish to learn Irish sign language can have access in the classroom to assistants who have Irish sign language as their first language and particularly in the case of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 7. [4791/99]

The issue raised by the Deputy is currently the subject of a pilot programme at St. Joseph's School for Hearing Impaired Boys at Cabra.

The school to which the Deputy refers has not sought such a facility. The case to which the Deputy refers has not previously been brought to my Department's attention.

However, I will arrange for a member of my Department's inspectorate to investigate the case raised by the Deputy with a view to determining what, if any, action can be taken in this regard.

Dan Neville

Question:

379 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will facilitate a person (details supplied) in County Limerick who has been running a facility for dyslexic children for several years in the new secondary school in Castletroy, Limerick in view of the fact that the present facilities afforded to this person are totally inadequate; if not, if this person will be facili tated in vacant classrooms in any local school in the Limerick area which has lost students in recent times; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4842/99]

County Limerick Vocational Education Committee has agreed a schedule of accommodation to provide for the post-primary educational needs of students in the Castletroy area.

It is not my Department's policy to include provision for the accommodation needs of such a centre when planning a new second level school. Consequently, there are no plans to include the rooms as requested in this new development.
