Vol. 500 No. 7

Written Answers. - Incorporated Bodies.

John Gormley

Question:

112 Mr. Gormley asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the number of charitable bodies on the list published by the Revenue Commissioners in January 1999 which are incorporated bodies; the Companies Office reference number in each case; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4817/99]

There are 5,666 bodies in total on the Revenue list, but the number of those who are incorporated bodies is not to hand. In fact, the information requested by the Deputy would involve a very large amount of work of many weeks' duration. This is because it is only possible to interrogate the database of companies in the Companies Registration Office one name at a time. It is also the case that the name on the Revenue list may not precisely reflect the name of the associated registered company which would require additional searches of like names in individual cases, in order to be as thorough as possible.

Our Department has very limited staffing resources in the company law administration area, and these are heavily committed at present on priority work dealing with the present spate of company law investigations. The information requested by the Deputy, is neither readily available nor easily obtainable and we regret this situation.
