Question:

307 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if, further to Parliamentary Questions Nos. 130, 131 and 132 of 3 February 1999, he has collated this information; and the number of public patients and private patients in public hospitals and the average duration of stay of these patients. [5125/99]

Comparable information for admissions for the three years in question is available for about 96 per cent of the designated beds in acute hospitals and is set out in table A below. Figures are given separately for overnight cases and day cases. Up to the beginning of this year, the returns on which the information is based were made on a quarterly basis. The information for 1998 is for the period January to September.

Comparable information for the three years for average length of stay of public and private patients is available for 91 per cent of designated overnight beds in acute hospitals. The information is set out in table B below. The information for 1998 is based on returns for the period January to September.
