Question:

309 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his Department has public liability insurance which covers irradiation of staff and the general public from any mobile phone transmitters which may be located on State property in view of the fact that, if the operating company ceases to exist, the liability may default to the landowner and in further view of the findings of the effects from low intensity exposures of the Vienna EMF resolution; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Question:

313 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his Department has employers' liability insurance which includes cover for irradiation of the employee from the hand held Garda communications devices; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5670/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 308, 309, 312 and 313 together.

Long-standing practice is that, generally, the State carries its own insurance. All radio equipment operated by the gardaí or from Garda premises is, inter alia, required by the terms of relevant licences to operate within internationally accepted safety standards, as are mobile phones used by Department staff, and, on this basis, I understand that no foreseeable risk to gardaí, civilian staff and members of the public should arise.
