Vol. 501 No. 3

Written Answers. - Support Services.

Nora Owen

Question:

250 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will examine the possibility of giving young disabled people assistance to take up places in nursing homes where they can get the care they need in view of the fact that many of them cannot be properly cared for in their homes without very high cost; the special consideration, if any, he has given this particular category of disabled, that is, those under 50 years of age; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6140/99]

A comprehensive range of support services is provided for people with physical and sensory disabilities, including the young chronically sick. The range of services is designed to enable them to live in the community with the maximum possible degree of independence. In cases where a person is unable to live in the community, appropriate long-term residential care is arranged. A health board may pay the cost of care in a privately owned nursing home where such a facility meets the needs of a particular person with a disability.
