Vol. 501 No. 3

Written Answers. - Architectural Heritage.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

301 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the proposals, if any, she has for the development of King John's Castle, Dungarvan, County Waterford (details supplied); and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6188/99]

The provision of visitor facilities at King John's Castle, Dungarvan, is one of a number of projects which are being funded by the Exchequer and EU under the operational programme for tourism 1994-1999. Proposals are in hands by Dúchas, the heritage service of my Department to provide such facilities as well as an exhibition area in the former barracks building. It is expected that this work will be completed early next year in time for the main tourist season.

Separately, archaeological excavations, which were necessary before conservation works could be undertaken, have been carried out and it is intended to initiate a programme of conservation work which will be carried out over a number of years.
