Written Answers. - Surgical Procedures.

Derek McDowell

Question:

57 Mr. McDowell asked the Minister for Health and Children the latest information he has received from the North-Eastern Health Board on the progress of the investigation the board commissioned from the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists concerning a number of caesarean hysterectomies carried out unnecessarily by a consultant in the area; the outcome of any investigation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5934/99]

The matter raised by the Deputy is under investigation by a group of experts nominated by the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists at the request of the North-Eastern Health Board. I understand the group's work is proceeding. It would not be appropriate for me to comment on any aspect of the group's investigation until its report has been finalised. The report of the group is expected in the next few months.
