Vol. 501 No. 3

Written Answers. - Tobacco Products.

Michael Ferris

Question:

66 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has requested tobacco companies to provide a full list of all ingredients contained in cigarettes; if so, if the companies have complied with the request; the steps, if any, he is taking in regard to those companies which have not complied; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5940/99]

Tobacco companies were requested to notify me under section 5 of the Tobacco (Health Promotion and Protection) Act, 1988, of the constituents other than tobacco, water and reconstituted sheet made wholly from tobacco and of the amount of such constituents used in brands of tobacco products manufactured and/or imported. The companies provided some information via a legal firm to my Department. The content and format of this information is being examined to see if it meets the legal requirements of the Act. I have received certain advice from the Attorney General on this aspect of the matter and I am awaiting further clarification.
