Vol. 501 No. 3

Written Answers. - Medical Treatment.

Jim Higgins

Question:

98 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will make an allocation to the Western Health Board to enable a person (details supplied) in County Mayo to travel to the United Kingdom in order to undertake the Lovaas therapy programme. [5788/99]

The provision of medical treatment to eligible persons in County Mayo is the statutory responsibility of the Western Health Board. This responsibility extends to considering applications for the provision of medical treatment outside the country to residents of the health board's area. Such applications are considered by the board having regard to resources available and on the basis that certain conditions must be satisfied. I have asked the chief executive officer of the board to investigate the position in relation to this case and to reply to the Deputy directly.
