Written Answers. - Harbours and Piers.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

124 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources when a ministerial order will be made regarding the application by Donegal County Council for the introduction of by-laws for Burtonport Harbour, County Donegal. [5865/99]

I can confirm for the Deputy that Donegal County Council, under the provisions of the Harbours Act, 1996, is empowered to make by-laws for the control and management of Burtonport Harbour. A ministerial order is not therefore statutorily required. Donegal County Council has however consulted my Department on the proposed by-law.

Question:

125 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the progress regarding improvement works at Killybegs Harbour, County Donegal. [5866/99]

I am committed to the development of Killybegs Harbour and, as a matter of priority, I am actively pursuing the upgrading of this key facility in line with the recommendation of the consultant's report which recommended the development of new berthage facilities outside the existing harbour.

I intend, in the 1999 Fishery Harbours Development Programme, to make provision for urgently-needed repair works to steel piles in the existing piers at Killybegs Fishery Harbour Centre. This is an essential part of the ongoing improvement works at Killybegs Harbour.

In addition, funding will continue for completion of the site investigation and wave-modelling studies in connection with the provision of new facilities.

The importance of Killybegs in the economic life of south-west Donegal is fully recognised. I am also aware of the crucial safety imperative for the provision of new facilities.
