Vol. 501 No. 5

Written Answers. - Mobile Security Service.

Noel Ahern

Question:

139 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will report on the Finglas East, Dublin 11, mobile security project for ten schools; if a report has been completed on the project; the position in this regard; when the new security measures will be fully in place; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6591/99]

In 1993, my Department approved the establishment of a pilot project to assist ten schools in Finglas East, Dublin 11 to counter serious vandalism problems. The pilot project was reviewed and continued each year on the basis of reports submitted by the schools. Under the project, grant assistance was provided towards the provision of a mobile security service. In 1998 the Department agreed to a proposal by the schools to provide support for the physical securing of the premises as an alternative to the mobile security. The physical security project is currently under way.

As a first step, my Department grant aided the provision of security lighting, extension to fire alarm systems and security shuttering at a number of the schools. Tender documentation is currently being prepared for the provision of security fencing at eight schools. It is my intention that the fencing project will proceed to construction as soon as the tendering process has been completed
