Vol. 501 No. 6

Written Answers. - Post Leaving Certificate Courses.

John Bruton

Question:

428 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will approve a post leaving certificate maintenance grant to a person (details supplied) in County Meath who is doing a course in child care; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7005/99]

Under the terms of the European Social Fund-aided maintenance grants scheme for post leaving certificate courses 1999, grants are avail able to eligible candidates who are entering approved PLC courses for the first time in the 1998-99 school year or who are already in attendance on an approved PLC course. However, candidates are ineligible if they already hold an NCVA level 2 or level 3 qualification or a third level qualification at national certificate, national diploma, degree, postgradaute or equivalent level.

As the candidate to whom the Deputy refers does not hold one of these qualifications, she is eligible to be considered for grant assistance under the terms of the PLC scheme. The position in relation to this case has now been clarified with County Meath Voctional Education Committee and the VEC will contact the candidate with a view to determining her eligibility for grant assistance under the remaining conditions of the scheme.
