Conor Lenihan

Question:

137 Mr. C. Lenihan asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to allegations of intimidation by RUC officers from Maghera station against members of a club (details supplied) in County Derry. [7246/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 136 and 137 together.

I confirm that my attention has been drawn to allegations that members of Slaughtneil GAA Club were harrassed by an RUC patrol in Maghera on 11 January 1999, following celebrations to mark the club's victory in the County Derry minor hurling final. There is also serious concern arising from allegations about an earlier incident on New Years Day when the club was celebrating its win in the Ulster club minor football championship.

The incidents in question, and my serious concern about them, have been raised on a number of occasions in recent weeks through the Anglo-Irish Secretariat. The Department will continue to monitor the cases closely.
