Vol. 502 No. 1

Written Answers. - Youth Services.

Liam Aylward

Question:

197 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the annual funding to the youth service in the Carlow region is only £22 per youth; if he will approve additional funding for the development of the youth service in Carlow town and county to enable an additional youth worker to be appointed, to provide youth information services which are not available, to allow the acquisition of a premises and the promotion of special youth work projects in disadvantaged areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7418/99]

My Department has sought details as to the basis for the figure referred to by the Deputy. The information provided will be considered in the context of allocations for 1999.

The allocation process will also have regard to policy considerations, existing commitments, and to the overall level of financial resources available for the youth sector. In this regard, I would draw the Deputy's attention to the fact that an additional £1.5 million has been made available for youth services in 1999.
