Vol. 502 No. 1

Written Answers. - Road Traffic Regulations.

Alan M. Dukes

Question:

63 Mr. Dukes asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has satisfied himself with the level of compliance with the regulations governing the lighting of towed trailers; if has further satisfied himself with the level of enforcement of the regulations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6110/99]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the number of prosecutions taken in accordance with the Road Traffic (Lighting of Vehicles) Regulations, 1963, as amended, in respect of towed trailers is not readily available and could be compiled only by the diversion to the task of a disproportionate amount of Garda time and resources.

Following are details of prosecutions taken under these regulations in respect of all mechanically propelled vehicles for the most recent 12 month period for which statistics are available.

Year

Prosecutions

1997

8,231

1996

6,918

1995

6,420

The enforcement of these regulations, including the lighting of towed trailers, is given a high priority by the Garda.
