Vol. 502 No. 2

Written Answers. - Birth Certificates.

John Perry

Question:

81 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Health and Children if a correct birth certificate will be immediately issued to a person (details supplied) in County Sligo; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7508/99]

The administration of the registration system is a matter for An t-Árd Chláraitheoir (the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages) and for local registrars who operate under his general direction.

I understand that the birth in question was originally registered by the mother of the person concerned, but that it has now come to light that the date of birth registered was not correct and that the correct date of birth was more than three months prior to the date of registration. In these circumstances it will be necessary to effect a new registration, in order to correct the error. I am informed by An tÁrd Chláraitheoir, that an application for his authority for the late registration of the birth in question, has been received by his office. However, the documentation furnished included a statutory declaration, which had not been completed in the manner prescribed by law. It has been necessary for An tÁrd Chláraitheoir to contact the person concerned to request a new and legally adequate declaration. When this declaration is received, the application will be processed with due despatch.
