Vol. 502 No. 3

Written Answers. - Clinical Care.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

351 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Health and Children the proposals, if any, he has to authorise chiropractors to refer patients directly for x-rays; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7936/99]

The right of referral of patients to clinical care lies with medical practitioners licensed under the Medical Practitioners Act, 1978. Chiropractice lies within the field of alternative medicine which is outside the scope of the Act and there are no current plans within my Department to include it. Consequently, I have no intention at this time of authorising chiropractors to refer patients directly for x-rays.
