Vol. 502 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Nora Owen

Question:

652 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans, if any, he has for the parish of Donabate and Portrane, County Dublin where Fingal County Council proposes to expand housing and where the capacity in the primary schools, even with recent extension permission, will be unable to accommodate additional children from September 2000 onwards; and the planning, if any, which has commenced for a new school on another site in the area. [8391/99]

I am aware that a significant number of new houses are proposed for the Donabate/Portrane area of north County Dublin. The architectural planning of an eight-classroom extension to the existing schools is at an advanced stage. The indications are that this additional accommodation will enable the schools to cater for the increased demand until 2002. The planning section of my Department is, at present, examining the likely accommodation requirements for the longer term and whether these can be met by way of further extension, if feasible, or by the provision of a new school.
