Vol. 502 No. 4

Written Answers. - Coastal Erosion.

David Stanton

Question:

104 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he has received a report from Cork County Council detailing erosion problems at the beach in Youghal, County Cork; if he will give details and the cost of any remedial and other works; if he will make funds available to address the problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8602/99]

My Department has received from Cork County Council a detailed report by consulting engineers on the erosion problems at Youghal. The report concluded that coast protection works involving extension of the existing groynes and beach nourishment would be required, at an estimated cost of £5.1 million.

This report has been assessed by my Department and a further study has been recommended to assess the most cost efficient options for improving coastal defences at Youghal. Accordingly, I recently announced that, as part of my Department's coast protection programme for 1999, financial assistance of up to £30,000 is being made available to Cork County Council towards this assessment. The funding needs for a costed programme of protection works at Youghal will be considered in light of the outcome of this assessment.
