Vol. 502 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

David Stanton

Question:

76 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will upgrade Youghal Garda station, County Cork, to district headquarters level and appoint a superintendent to the town; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8675/99]

The detailed deployment of Garda personnel to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities who have informed me that the current personnel strength of Youghal Garda station as of 2 March 1999 is 23. There is augmented by personnel from surrounding stations who are deployed to Youghal particularly during the summer months, when the population increases, due to the influx of tourists.

The Garda authorities also inform me that there is a very successful rural policing scheme in operation in the area with two area administrative centres, based at Midleton and Youghal.

I am further informed that the Garda authorities are satisfied with the present policing arrangements in place in Youghal and do not consider it is necessary to upgrade Youghal Garda station to a district headquarters level or to appoint a superintendent, as the present policing structures in place are adequate to meet the demands placed upon it.
