Vol. 503 No. 3

Written Answers. - Nursing Services.

Michael Ring

Question:

370 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Health and Children the plans, if any, he has to approve SEN nurses for 90 per cent of staff nurses pay, perhaps linked to work service record and so on; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10141/99]

I have no plans to approve such a pay relativity arrangement as the United Kingdom State Enrolled Nurse, SEN, qualification is not recognised here. I should explain that in this country there is only one level of general nurse, that of Registered General Nurse, RGN, and that this is equivalent to the UK qualification of the same title. This level of general nursing is governed by EU Directives which set down the minimum amount of training required to achieve the RGN qualification or its equivalent throughout the European Union.
